Following a long and burdensome process, the first recreational marijuana shops are set to open Tuesday July 8, in the state of Washington. It’s been two years since the residents of Washington voted to legalize the possession of marijuana under Initiative 502, and today the Washington State Liquor Control Board will issue the first wave of store licenses. According to reports, as many as 20 shops from the planned 300-plus should receive their licenses today. More than 2,600 people applied to grow the marijuana that will be sold, but fewer than 100 have been approved by the state Liquor Control Board. State rules require a 24-hour “quarantine” before growers can ship it to the stores, which may cause a hold up tomorrow when shops try and open. Once the weed arrives, the stores must verify their bar-coded inventory and enter it into the state’s tracking system before they can sell it. Will Washington‘s marijuana shop owners experience what we saw in Colorado? Only time will tell. Be sure to let us know what you think in the comment section below!
