In 1947, Captain Charles ‘Chuck’ Yeager became the first pilot to fly faster than the speed of sound using the Bell X-1 aircraft. Fast forward 70 years, NASA is busy working with Lockheed Martin to build the first supersonic passenger jet. In efforts to make the plane suitable for commercial use, NASA set out to minimize the ‘supersonic boom’ that occurs when a plane flies faster than sound. Lockheed Martin just finished a preliminary design this week, that has been approved by senior experts and engineers from across the space exploration company. A 8 X 6 ft model of the plane has already been tested in a supersonic wind tunnel at NASA’s research center in Cleveland. The goal as of now, is to get a full-scale piloted plane flying by 2021.
